Will Porcelain Veneers Look Like Natural Teeth?

When bonded to the teeth, ultra-thin porcelain veneers are virtually undetectable and highly resistant to stains from coffee, tea, and even tobacco products.

For both strength and aesthetics, their resemblance to healthy, natural tooth enamel is unsurpassed by many other cosmetic dentistry options. Because veneers are thin and translucent, light can pass through them, allowing them to blend beautifully with the natural color of the underlying tooth.

How Durable Are Porcelain Veneers?

With proper care, porcelain veneers can enhance your smile for well over a decade. Dr. Alkhatib ensures that every veneer is crafted from high-quality porcelain and bonded using advanced, proven materials designed for long-term durability and aesthetics.

The Porcelain Veneers Procedure

Planning Your New Smile

You will want to take an active role in planning your smile design. Dr. Alkhatib will review the possibilities and limitations of porcelain veneers and help you create a treatment plan that aligns with your cosmetic goals.

Preparing the Teeth for Veneers

The second appointment typically takes one to two hours. Although a porcelain veneer is extremely thin, the teeth must be lightly buffed to accommodate the added thickness.

Approximately one-half millimeter of tooth structure is removed. This procedure often requires little or no local anesthesia.

A mold of the teeth is then taken and sent to the dental laboratory, where your custom veneers are fabricated. If the teeth are particularly unsightly, temporary veneers may be placed while the permanent veneers are being created. Your new veneers are generally ready within one to two weeks.

Bonding the Porcelain Veneers

At your third appointment, Dr. Alkhatib will place each veneer on your teeth using water or glycerin to evaluate its fit and color.

At this stage, the final shade of the veneer can still be adjusted through the color of the bonding cement. Once the ideal appearance has been achieved, the tooth is cleansed with special materials to ensure a strong bond.

A specialized dental cement is placed between the tooth and the veneer, and a visible light beam is used to harden the material. This appointment generally takes one to two hours.

Porcelain Veneers Care and Maintenance

Brush and floss daily and return for a follow-up visit after one to two weeks.

Continue to brush and floss normally. You should not be concerned about damaging your veneers through regular oral hygiene habits.

Non-abrasive toothpaste is recommended to help protect the polished surface of your veneers. A consistent home care routine is essential to maintaining the long-term beauty of your smile.

Managing Sensitivity After Veneer Placement

Some sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures may occur after your veneers are placed. This is typically related to the amount of enamel remaining on the tooth following preparation.

This sensitivity is normal and usually subsides within one to two weeks. If it continues beyond that period, please contact our office.

Night Guards for Teeth Clenching and Grinding

If you are a known clencher or grinder (bruxer), please let us know. Dr. Alkhatib may recommend a soft night guard to help minimize the pressure placed on your teeth while you sleep and protect your porcelain veneers.
